Annie’s struggle with anorexia began years ago, and she reached her lowest weight of just 29kg (roughly 63 pounds), a dangerously low weight that caused serious medical complications and placed her at high risk of heart attack. For five years, she fought her eating disorder, undergoing numerous hospitalizations and medical treatments. Despite the challenges, Annie found hope and strength through her love of running.

Turning to Running for Healing

In an effort to regain control over her life and health, Annie turned to running as a form of therapy. Her passion for running became a powerful tool in her recovery. In October of 2023, she completed the Chesterfield Half Marathon, a remarkable accomplishment that symbolized her progress and resilience.

In a heartfelt social media post, Annie shared her perspective on recovery: “I came to the delightful realization that rehabilitation is a breathtaking process that should be thrilling, unforgettable, and amazing. I believe that my anorexia will always be a part of me, but I’ve learned to control it and stop thinking about food.”

Annie’s recovery journey began in earnest in 2014 when she decided to fight against her eating disorder. Reflecting on the process, she recalled, “I can’t say exactly what occurred, but this time, it was just for myself. The battle was incredible, and each day was marked by excruciating feelings and extraordinary bravery.”

Her dedication paid off: “I’ve put on three stones in the last four months, and I’m now at my heaviest since 2014,” she proudly shared. Despite the ongoing challenges, Annie’s mindset has shifted toward self-love and acceptance.

Through her recovery, Annie has learned that the way people treat themselves and others is far more important than physical appearance. In her words, “These are the things that will make you happy and are crucial to you.” For Annie, focusing on respect for others and embracing her passion for running has been essential in transforming her life.

Once, Annie was so underweight that she would often feel faint or fall, surviving on little more than a piece of bread each day. Today, she is focused on building a healthier relationship with her body, gaining weight and strength, and living a more balanced life.
