Why La Follette, Tennessee
La Follette has one of the more deliberately planned origin stories in East Tennessee. Brothers Harvey and Grant LaFollette, first cousins of U.S. Senator Robert M. La Follette Sr., bought roughly 37,000 acres at Big Creek Gap around 1890 and founded a coal, iron, and railway company that built one of the largest blast furnaces in the entire South, employing some 1,500 workers at its peak. The brothers even hired novelist John Fox Jr. to help design the town itself when it incorporated in 1897, giving it an unusually wide 100-foot main street and the striking 27-room Glen Oaks mansion, which still stands today on the National Register of Historic Places.
Campbell County, where La Follette sits, was formed in 1806 and became Tennessee’s largest coal-producing county by the early 1900s, with county voters rejecting secession by an overwhelming margin in 1861 and forming the state’s first Union Army company. A beautifully maintained 1915 home with real mountain views and its own pool sits today in a town built from one of Tennessee’s most ambitious industrial ventures.
