This 5 bedroom home in Lorain, Ohio, is a big Victorian-era house with 3,507 square feet across three floors. It is listed for sale at $124,900, and the space-to-price ratio is hard to ignore.
Built in 1900, the house offers five bedrooms, two bathrooms, two kitchens, and several living areas. It needs work, but the woodwork alone makes a strong first case.
Curb Appeal on Washington Avenue in Lorain
The front facade has real presence. A steep front gable, an arched attic window, and a deep covered porch give the house a classic turn-of-the-century face.
Stone piers anchor the porch, and wide steps lead up from a straight front walk. Meanwhile, a large tree wrapped in ivy shades one side of the yard.
The listing notes that the roof and siding were replaced in 2021. That matters, because those are two of the costliest exterior jobs on an older home.
The lot measures about 6,599 square feet, or roughly 0.15 acres. Off-street parking is listed, which is a real plus on a city street.
The Heart of the Home
Walk through the front door and the original woodwork takes over. Dark stained paneling wraps the staircase, and carved columns frame the openings between rooms.
A paneled staircase and carved wood columns greet you in the front hall.
The floors are hardwood, worn but intact in many spots. Plus, the ceilings feel generous, so the rooms stay open and airy even with all that dark trim.
The main living room is broad and bright. Bay windows push out along one wall, and a tiled fireplace sits between built-in window seats.
The front living room pairs a tiled fireplace with tall windows and wood columns.
A second fireplace with a light stone surround anchors another room. So you get two warm focal points for cold Lake Erie winters.
Leaded glass windows add color and pattern near the front door. In fact, details like these are a large part of this home’s character and long-term property value.
A leaded glass window and dark wood trim add vintage detail to the front room.
Daily traffic flows in a loop through the main floor. It is not an open-concept floor plan, but you can move from the front hall to the living rooms and back toward the kitchen without dead ends.

Two Kitchens and Dining Space
The main kitchen is a full knotty pine room. Pine cabinets, pine walls, and a coffered pine ceiling create a warm cabin feel in the middle of the city.
Knotty pine covers the walls, cabinets, and ceiling of the main kitchen.
Dark counters run along two walls, and a window sits over the sink. It is not a gourmet kitchen out of the box, but built-in cabinets climb high and give you plenty of storage.
The second kitchen sits on an upper floor. It has blue walls, wood cabinets, a double sink, and butcher-block style counters.
The upper-floor kitchen offers wood cabinets, blue walls, and long counters.
There is room near the main kitchen for a casual dining table. And the formal rooms nearby could host larger holiday meals with ease.
Two kitchens open up options. For example, extended family could share the house while keeping separate cooking and dining routines.
Questions to Ask About the Layout
- Will both kitchens stay, or will one become a laundry or pantry?
- Which floor makes the most sense for the primary suite?
- How will you heat and light the third floor in winter?
Bedrooms and Private Quarters
The five bedrooms spread across the upper floors. Several of them have wide windows, and one room curves out into a bay that fills it with light.
A bedroom with gray walls opens into a bay of windows facing the street.
Carpet covers many of the bedroom floors, and the paint varies room to room. Still, the layouts are clean and the closets are in place.
A primary suite could take shape in the largest bedroom. Meanwhile, the smaller rooms could serve as offices, hobby rooms, or guest space.
The bathrooms mix eras. One features a vintage clawfoot tub painted bright teal, and another has a newer glass shower.

The Third Floor
The top floor sits under steep sloped ceilings. It feels tucked away, with carpet, ceiling fans, and windows set into the gables.
The third floor stretches under sloped ceilings toward a pair of gable windows.
This level could become a studio, a playroom, or a private guest wing. And it adds even more usable space to an already large footprint.
Outdoor Living and Grounds
The yard is a city-sized lot, so it is easy to manage. A green patch of lawn fills the front, and the back opens toward a paved area.
The back of the house shows a rear porch, stairs, and a paved parking area.
Because the lot is compact, yard chores stay light. That leaves more weekend time and budget for the interior projects.
A rear porch with steps gives you a simple spot for morning coffee. With some planters and chairs, it could become a small outdoor living space.
The floor plans in the gallery show how the rooms connect on each level. They are worth studying before a showing, because the layout is the key to this house.
Below the house, the full basement has brick walls and open framing. The listing notes a new furnace and a new hot water tank, which buyers will appreciate.
Location and Life in Lorain, Ohio
Lorain sits on the shore of Lake Erie, west of Cleveland. So lake views, beaches, and waterfront parks are part of the wider local appeal.
The city also offers marinas, fishing, and lakefront trails. Plus, its location gives residents a short drive toward larger job centers in the region.
The house stands next to a large brick building on Washington Avenue. For buyers who want an established, in-town address, that block could be a prime location.
School and neighborhood details were not included in the listing. Buyers should confirm school zones, commute routes, and nearby services on their own.
Is This Lorain Home Worth a Look?
This is not a turnkey home. It needs updates, and the listing is honest about the work ahead.
The listing also says the house appears to have been laid out as a three-unit property at one point. But buyers must do their own due diligence before using it that way.
What stands out is the mix of size, character, and recent big-ticket updates. In this real estate market, that combination at this price deserves attention.
