According to Alibaba Damo Academy, an internal research initiative launched by Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group Holding, the top technology trends for 2023 are anticipated to be generated artificial intelligence (AI), dual-engine decision intelligence, cloud computing, and security.
The academy also identified trends like chiplets, processing in memory, hardware-software integrated cloud computing architecture, predictable fabric based on edge-cloud synergy, computational imaging, and large-scale urban digital twins in a report that was released on Wednesday.
The head of the academy, Jeff Zhang, stated, “Looking at 2023… the wide application of technologies will facilitate the rollout of AI and other digital technologies in vertical markets, and promote the collaboration of the public and private sectors, as well as individuals, in security technology and security management.” An irreversible trend has emerged from technological innovation and its application to specific industries.
Damo, whose parent company Alibaba also owns the South China Morning Post, stated that the forecast involved analyzing public papers and patent filings from the previous three years as well as conducting interviews with nearly 100 scientists, entrepreneurs, and engineers from around the world.

The goal of dual-engine decision intelligence is to get around the problems that traditional decision-making has, like dealing with problems with a lot of unknowns and taking a long time to solve big problems. The speed and quality of decision-making are enhanced when machine learning is incorporated into decision optimization.
Damo also predicted that pre-trained multimodal foundation models would be able to gather information from a variety of modalities and present it using a unified representation learning framework. With chiplet-based design, a system on a chip (SoC) can be broken down into multiple chiplets, manufactured using different processes for each chiplet, and packaged and interconnected to form an SoC.
The integration of a central processing unit and memory on a single chip, known as Processing in Memory technology, enables data to be processed directly in memory. A hardware-software integrated cloud computing architecture facilitates the acceleration of cloud applications while preserving cloud application development’s high elasticity and agility.
In a separate forecast, Amazon Web Services listed custom silicon and specialized chips among the top five technology trends for 2023. According to MIT, one of the most important technology trends to keep an eye on this year will be an open standard for semiconductor architecture called RISC-V, or “risk-five.”
According to the report, “the de facto standard of next-generation cloud computing” and “new development opportunities for core software [research and development] and dedicated chip design” will be provided by the Cloud Infrastructure Processor.
The report states that in the next three to five years, cloud-native security “will become more versatile and can adapt more easily to multi-cloud architectures.” According to the report, it will also make it easier to construct security systems that are precise, dynamic, end-to-end, and applicable to hybrid environments.
